London, UK

Hi everyone! Sorry it's been a while. As I'm sure you were too, I was very busy over the festive period with two weeks in the UK! I'm back on American soil now (a lot heavier than when I left) and ready to bring in 2017! This year has been quite the journey, sometimes literally, and I'm looking forward to what the next one surprises me with. But, before I step into all things January (and probably detox mode), I have a couple of posts from my time over the pond. This first one will be about the bakeries I visited and the second will be about a few vegan/vegetarian eateries that Caleb & I tasted too! So let's crack on...

Cookies & Scream

Ok, Ok, I know I've written about these guys before, but as we were in Camden again, there was no way we weren't going to go back. The GOSH Brownies are THE softest, moistest, most chocolatey brownie I've ever had the pleasure of eating since having to be GF and I'll be damned if I don't promote them every chance I get. I have no idea how they create such magic (probs witchcraft), but whatever it is, I'm won over by it. Oh, and their Choc Chip Cookies aren't half bad either. I couldn't even wait for a photo before tucking into both. Next time, I must try and have one of their "milkshakes"; remember this place is vegan, so dairy free too, which makes their achievements even more astounding. GO EAT HERE.

Beyond Bread

I actually meant to visit this place last time I was in London, but tube closures and other various factors got in the way - so this time I was determined. There are actually a few locations of this "chain" now, but we visited the one on Charlotte Place as it was the closest. I still didn't manage to get there on time to experience their breakfast (dammit), but there were still lots of wonders (and even more that I wish I had bought!).

We grabbed two toasted panini's (the two I wanted to try "Moody Cow" & "The Usual Suspect" were out) so we went for roasted vegetables, pesto and fake cheese (vegan hurrah!) and we ate them sat outside as we were starving (along with juice from the vegan juice bar next door)! They could have done with being toasted a bit more - fake cheese tends to take longer to reach the melted stage and they weren't as melted as I would have liked, but they were delicious!  I actually didn't get a photo because I was too hungry and gobbled it down - whoops!

I also grabbed a chocolate & custard danish, Caleb took a cinnamon roll and I got a red velvet cupcake & white sourdough loaf to go. The chocolate & custard danish was AMAZING. Flaky, crumbly, sweet but not too sweet, Caleb & I were marveling at how they achieved the different layers of pastry. It was wonderful. The cinnamon roll was exactly the same, although it wasn't as moist at mine and it was a bit tougher to eat (perhaps it wasn't as fresh).

I saved the red velvet cupcake until later as by then we were pretty full, & let me tell you know it was one of the BEST red velvet cupcakes I have EVER eaten. The cupcake itself was moist and bouncy, and the cream cheese frosting was whipped and lighter than any cream cheese frosting I've ever had. I honestly have no idea how they made it so light. It was truly amazing. I wish I had, had the time to buy a whole box of them. Wonderful.

The loaf of bread I didn't try until the next day after we got to my parent's house. I used it on a sandwich and by then it had already started to get a bit tough. I was desperate to eat a sandwich with soft bread, but I clearly waited too long. The bread itself was fine, not the best I've ever eaten, and I just couldn't believe how quickly it went stale. I'm not sure how long it had been out before I bought it, but by the second day at my parents, it was too hard to even cut through with a bread knife. After all the delights, I was a bit disappointed. If I went again, I'd still try other loaves though, just incase I had a bad one-off.

Overall, stay for the cake and pastries (there was a Victoria Sponge I was desperate to have a slice of) but maybe don't buy your weekly bread from here, unless you're going to devour the loaf (it was quite small) in one day! Ps. Next time I will definitely be making it to breakfast here!

Pieminister

Ok, so this isn't quite a bakery, but it wasn't a restaurant that we ate at and it has pastry, so I thought I'd throw it in here. I'd been wanting to try Pieminister ever since my friend Dav posted a photo of his food on Instagram. It looked amazing, and after I looked up their menu & saw they did GF pies, I was determined to give it a go. I'm actually not a savoury pie lover; I've never fancied a chicken & mushroom, or a steak & ale and I've definitely never wanted a steak & kidney, so this was a random place for me to want to eat. However, after I saw that they did vegetarian pies, I was sold. We ended up not having the time to eat here in London & didn't get to try their chips (yes I mean chunky fries America) which looked to die for, so I was sad about that, but nonetheless, I managed to buy a pie from their location in Oxford (they have a few locations all over England, so I was over the moon that there was one I managed to get to.) I bought an unbaked Heidi pie - sweet potato, goat's cheese and spinach (three of my fave things) and took it home to eat after Christmas day.

I literally don't have the words to describe how delicious this pie was. I still can't get over it. It had the exact balance of sweet and savory, the seasoning was perfect and the pastry you'd never even be able to tell was GF.  Unbelievable. I can't get over how much I enjoyed eating a savoury pie - it was that good. This place is top of my list for when I go back. I hope everyone who reads this in the UK gets to visit one and enjoy what I did. I obviously can't speak for their meat pies, but if they're anything near as good as the veggie one, you are in for a treat. Now if only there was a way to get some sent here...
