NYC, NY

It's December! This year has gone by so fast I feel like I've been constantly moving, yet haven't visited half the places I wanted to! Stomach issues still a daily battle, maybe the new year will refresh my intestines and make them magic (stranger things have happened I'm sure!) In about 10 days I'll be back in the UK & Ireland hunting for places to eat, so feel free to leave suggestions in the comments, but for now I can share a couple of quick places from a trip I made to the Big Apple recently.

Mighty Quinns

My friend's Rosie & Tom were visiting NYC (from the UK) for 5 days recently and I decided it would be nice to see them and hopped on a plane for a day. We did a couple of things I'd never done in NY and went on the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and we checked out the Rockefeller Center (which we got very lost in and almost ended up in place you needed tickets for - unfortunately not Jimmy Fallon). Anyway, that evening we decided we were going to a Speakeasy called Bathtub Gin, but we thought we should line our stomach's first and on Rosie's list was Mighty Quinn's BBQ.

Mighty Quinn's is a walk up and order kind of place, its a chain around the city and, well, it was ... DELICIOUS!

I went for the brisket, and it melted in my mouth like I haven't experienced from BBQ in a while. We have a BBQ place in Columbus that I love & this Brisket was definitely superior. The chips (fries) were crispy and not greasy in the slightest and the coleslaw was the perfect compliment. I love the vinegar slaw that BBQ restaurants tend to do (I only wish the portion of sides was a little bit bigger.) The champion is clearly the meat and it should take all the focus, it's that good. The only downside was their BBQ sauce; it was very thin and I tend to prefer the thicker kind that you can scoop up with a chip. Save for that, I would love to have one of these down the road from me.

Erin McKenna's Bakery

A couple of years ago I spent a few days in the city with my friend Soraya and made her go to a bunch of GF bakeries with me (sorry Soraya!). Fast forward a couple of years and I also made Rosie & Tom go to a bakery with me (sorry guys). Anyway, we headed to Erin McKenna's Bakery after I spotted some photos of there on Instagram and we arrived only for me to feel like I'd been there before. I think it must have changed it's name, because I didn't remember it being called this, but the treats were very much the same. Erin McKenna's is a fully vegan and gluten free bakery and is an absolute treat. (Side note - please excuse my badly chipped nail varnish in the photos.)

I bought: 2 apple churros, a chocolate cupcake with vanilla (blue) frosting, an eclair, a donut with chocolate topping and a maple glazed donut. Don't worry, I didn't eat it all in one go. It took a few days.

The churros were quite heavy and had a small amount of apple filling. Also heavy on the cinnamon, I still enjoyed them. The chocolate cupcake was very tasty and extremely chocolatey. So chocolatey that I couldn't finish it in one go and had to eat it over a few days. I'm amazed at how chocolatey it was considering it was vegan too. I thought the eclair might be full of something like a vegan cream, but it was a flavoured frosting that I wasn't that keen on. I only ate half of it whilst I was waiting for my delayed flight and I didn't eat the rest. All it did was make me miss eclairs and hope that one day, I'll find a GF one that tastes just like an original.

Now the donuts... Ohhhh the donuts. The chocolate covered one was everything you'd expect from a "normal" chocolate donut - except of course, it's not! It's GF & vegan! The topping was thicker than a "normal" donut, but I'd still eat a few of these in one sitting if I didn't care about my waistline.

The maple glazed donut was a thing of beauty. It wasn't as light as I like donuts to be, but that is always exceptionally hard when it comes to GF. The glaze was crispy, sweet and beautiful. I wish I had bought 20 of these. And I could have eaten all of them. Easily. Next time I go back to this bakery it will be my first choice and I'll leave with a box full. Yummy! Thank you Erin McKenna - whoever you are!

Last tip - we ate at The Grey Dog Cafe on Mulberry St the next day, and they had GF bread for toast, so if you're looking for a good breakfast, this is the place. They even serve it 'til 3pm!
