Columbus, OH

Cherbourg Bakery

A couple of years ago I got told about this bakery. A new hope in a sea of non-celiac friendly places in Columbus. I'm not sure if this was the first GF bakery here, but it certainly seems like it was, and to me, it was the first dedicated place I found. I would go and eat cake-style donuts on a sunny morning with my friend Laurel (seen above) and I would enjoy bits and pieces from their (also nut-free) range at work when we were having a day of being spoilt. Well, yesterday I went back there for the first time in a couple of years. I'm not sure why I waited so long - maybe because it's kind of a long drive to get to for me, maybe because I found Bake Me Happy, but yesterday I was in Bexley & decided to give it another go. And I'm sure glad I did.

S'Mores slices are one of their "things" and you can't go wrong with them. Crumbly, fluffy, and incredibly sweet these are one of the best items this bakery is known for and worth buying every time you go. They're a Graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate chip super delicious treat.

I love a lemon bar and the ones here are really, really good. Slightly crunchy on top and just the right amount of tart, if you like your treats a little less sweet, these are the guys for you. They're always a favourite of mine and I don't think I noticed they did them until this visit, but it was a great find.

Also since my last visit, they've started to do Petit-Choux to order. They have the pastry puff's made daily and only fill them with sweet cream (or chocolate cream) once they are bought to keep them extra fresh. As with any gluten-free baking, this pastry is obviously not as light as it would be if it were normal, but it is pretty darn close and I thoroughly enjoyed the two I bought. They are a great size & I made a quick chocolate sauce to dip them in so they were like eclairs! Cherbourg also does croissants daily now (they used to only be available if you ordered a bunch of them), but I unfortunately didn't get to try one of those.

Their donuts although cake-like have always been well done and very tasty. Yesterday I chose the chocolate one with chocolate frosting and it was lovely. It fell apart in my hands, but I enjoyed it all the same.

The only negative I can think of Cherbourg is their cupcakes. I haven't had one in years but the last time I did they were dry. So, unless they've changed their receive recently (which they very well could have) I would avoid them and get your cupcakes from Bake Me Happy instead.

Also for you to try if you go there...

- Zucchini Loaf
- Espresso Brownie
- Their cookies (yum yum yummy!)

Route 62 BBQ

After having people at work continuously tell me how good this place is (for what seems like forever), this week I finally got to try 62 BBQ!

We drove up to a building that looked kind of scary and like a "hole in the wall" type of place - but that's what 62 is known for; being that hidden gem that's local.

I ordered the beef brisket without a bun, slaw and fries. I asked which of the sauces I could eat & they told me I couldn't eat any of the ones out front on offer, but they had a special GF sauce out back and would give me a pot of that on the side. I was worried they'd give me a small side of
sauce (I LOVE my sauce), but they gave me a giant pot which I loved.

The rest of the portion was also giant. I only managed to eat a part of my beef brisket. I must admit, I think the brisket from City BBQ is better, but I still really enjoyed this and would happily eat it again and again. It was moist, fell apart easily and had an amazing aroma. The fries were also great - very crispy just how I like them. Finally, the coleslaw had a garlic tang to it, which I LOVED. I'm much more a fan of vinegar slaw usually, but this felt light even though it was regular. Very enjoyable. I am told that the wings here are unbelievable and I watched as my friends ate a LOT of them, so I'm sure you should give those a try too!

P.S Don't forget to follow the GlutenFMe Instagram for daily food photos!
