Niagara Falls, Canada

This year I'm really trying to visit some world sights that are easy for me (living in America) to see. Well, one on the list was Niagara Falls. I had planned to go last year, but it didn't quite work out, so this year me & my friend Caylee were determined to go. Especially as it's only a 5 & 1/2 hour drive from Columbus! So, on April 27th we set off with a car full of snacks (including some GF choc. chip cookies her mum had made) and spent a couple of days in Canada at Niagara.

On our first night there, tired and not really looking for anything exciting to eat we ended up at TGI Fridays, which, in America is actually not that great (in fact it's kind of embarrassing), which is strange to me because in the UK it is SO good. Anyways, we wanted a big cocktail and both ordered some fajitas and nothing was that exciting to write home about. It was the closest place to our hotel which sat right above the falls on the Canadian side & was an easy evening choice. End of story.

The next day we set off on our adventure to walk down to the falls. There were two things we wanted to do: 1) The boat that sets sail into the heart of the falls and 2) The walk behind the falls themselves. Well, we managed to do both those things and let's just say I was happy it was a sunny day because we got soaked to the bone during the adventures. It was also incredibly difficult to get any photos because of the amount of water spraying off Niagara! If you are ever going to go see the falls, please go to the Canadian side, the "American side" just doesn't even compare and I'm not sure it should be given the same name as it's further down and is about a third of the size of the "real" waterfall. Anyways, during this day we walked and walked and walked (about 8 miles in total for the day I believe) and found ourselves wanting a burger (what's new for me?) so we stopped in at The Works

The Works

Now this place looked awesome. There were so many types of burgers to choose from, both pre designed and build your own, let alone the different types of patty's that you can also get! There were also so many toppings I didn't know what to do with myself, plus a whole area on the menu dedicated to what GF options were on offer. Brilliant.

In the end I created my own and got the beef burger patty stuffed with cheese. For my toppings I had bacon, avocado, caramelized onions and jalapeƱos all in a GF bun. I also ordered a side of fries (I think that they come with fries as standard) and bacon garlic roasted aioli for dipping. That all sounds like a right mouthful doesn't it. Well, it was.

Let's just start with the bun. It was great. A lot of places when offering a GF bun just chuck it on the plate and not think about it. Well, as we all  (as sufferers) know, GF buns fall apart - especially if they're not warmed up or cooked in anyway to make them a bit softer. This was the opposite. It was warm, soft, had been grilled, it was perfect. The burger itself however, was just too thick for me. I'm not sure if it was because I got a stuffed patty, but I just prefer my burgers a little thinner. The cheese it was stuffed with also didn't taste of much, which made me think it was mozzarella and not the cheddar that I wrongly expected it to be. I probably should've just topped it with cheese for a better result. The other toppings I ordered were great. I definitely made the right choices with them. And the fries were super crispy and cooked to perfection. Let me just say that the bacon garlic aioli was RIDICULOUS. SO GOOD. I used it on the fries with ketchup and then I smeared some of it on my burger bun too it was that good. Definitely order a side of that sauce when you go.

The portion size itself was pretty darn big. I cut my burger in half, ate half my fries and took the leftovers with me & I never got around to eating them because I was full right up until I went to sleep!

Overall, having been a little disappointed with the burger patty I chose, I would definitely go back and recommend this place if you feel like a good burger whilst visiting the falls, I think I just need to get my order right and next time, I am more than willing to give it a try!

Are there places you want to see in America/Canada? My next must see is the Grand Canyon. Have you ever been to Niagara Falls?
