Sometimes, I love to be a tourist and do the “tourist” type
things. I travel frequently, but it doesn’t always give me an opportunity to
see the sights or “must-sees” of each city or country, so for the past couple
of days I visited Washington D.C with my sister-in-law so I could do just that.
The Lincoln memorial, Arlington
Cemetery, The White House, I saw it all!
Of course, this blog isn’t about the sights, this blog is
about my search for gluten-free food and living. As I was only there for a
short amount of time, I managed to fit in just two places: Old Ebbitt Grill and
&pizza. The first, had great cocktails, a tasty piece of steak and were
super helpful when I told them of my allergy and the latter was just, well, it
was great!
&pizza
No, I don’t keep making a typo it’s really called that. When
researching GF food in D.C this pizza chain came up in most lists. I hadn’t had
pizza in a long while, so we went in search, expecting to find a restaurant and
in it’s place we found a Chipotle-style “fast food” joint.
&pizza is not a GF restaurant, but it does offer a GF
pizza crust. I am not someone who rolls the dice on if something is 100% GF and
they leave it up to the consumer to take the chance, but with pizza places, as
long as they’re not laying out the dough on the same board, it’s safe to say I
usually do ok (although if you’re a coeliac sufferer like me, the smallest
micro can set off my intestines, I just never know). &pizza places their
crusts on individual cooking trays and the GF is pre packaged, so it’s not
rolled out on anything that the previous evil crust has touched, so I felt good
when ordering. As I said before it’s similar to Chipotle, you move down the
line ordering sauces, cheeses, veggies, proteins etc. that you’d love on your
pizza (side note, they also offer vegan options!) or, you can order one of the
house pizza flavours, it’s all very slick and all very well done.
I’m a skeptical GF pizza eater, but I can say honestly, that
this was… awesome! The concept, the
design, my topping choices (ha), and even the box it came in, incase I had any left;
I enjoyed the whole experience (apart from the music being louder than a
nightclub). This chain is fast growing
and I can only hope, for my waistline, that it takes it’s time coming to
Columbus. For now, I will be hitting &pizza every time there’s one wherever
I am.
If you’re interested, find your nearest &pizza here. If
there are any amazing GF places I should check out next time I get to go to D.C
please let me know in the comments below.
